Reporting to the Director, Sustainable Maintenance Operations, the Facilities intern will have overall responsibility for coordinating and documenting the college’s residence hall summer maintenance program. The college has approximately 1560 beds in 18 residence halls, 500,000 square feet. There is a robust program of summer residence hall space use for students, alumni, and camps. Residence hall maintenance and cleaning must be coordinated to be accomplished effectively by aligning schedules and resources to accomplish the tasks. Work progress must be tracked and adjusted as schedule influences change and be inspected for completeness and quality. The work of this intern will build upon and document the preliminary procedures developed by last summer’s intern. This is a temporary position to commence in mid-May and last through mid-August 2026.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Review the schedule of open residence hall times with Events Office and Facilities Service Response.
  • Coordinate maintenance plan for open residence halls with maintenance supervisors and Environmental Services (EVS) Supervisors.
  • Enhance and build upon existing maintenance checklists for residence hall rooms, common spaces, and restrooms.
  • Work with procurement to requisition needed supplies.
  • Evaluate progress and inspect spaces to ensure quality standards and schedule are being met; work with maintenance and EVS supervisors to work out deficiencies for either.
  • Document any changes to the existing program procedures and opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate, collaborate and communicate with other Stakeholders; Office of Student Engagement (OSE), Events Management, Capital Planning and Project Management, Alumni Office, and others.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent and active full-time college or university enrollment in a facilities management, architecture, or related program.
  • Valid and current driver's license (vehicle not needed).
  • Proficiency with common Google and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to learn and use the college’s work order system; Asset Essentials.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous hotel hospitality experience.
  • Previous maintenance experience.
  • Previous commercial cleaning experience.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work in person.
  • Sitting and/or standing for long periods of time.
  • Use of hands to handle, control, feel, or reach for tools, supplies, or controls.
  • Repetition of the same movements.
  • Seeing details of objects that are less than a few feet away.
  • Regular standing and walking with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced and often noisy unenclosed receiving area in an indoor office environment, with frequent need to go outside.
  • Must be adaptable to the changing needs of the position and be able to concentrate despite distractions.

PA Criminal Required

Swarthmore College requires a PA Criminal background check for all staff positions prior to the start of employment.

MVR Required by Position

Due to operating a College owned motor vehicle while performing essential job responsibilities for this position, a motor vehicle report (MVR) clearance is required prior to the start of employment.

The pay for this position is $20.00 per hour, which represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range at the time of posting.
