The opportunity:

On occasions when the TriCollege Libraries Van Driver is absent, the Backup Van Driver coordinates timely and accurate distribution and transportation of library materials throughout the TriCollege Library System (Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore). They are responsible for the packing, collection, and delivery of library materials to and from each of three (3) library locations on a set daily schedule.

Important notes about this position:

  • Possible year-round requests (except during the 2-week winter break).
    Weekdays only.
  • Schedule, if called in, will be approximately 10:00am to 1:00pm.
  • May be called in on short notice.
  • May be required for as little as one day or as much as several weeks to cover a planned vacation or approved leave.
  • No guaranteed number of hours per week or year.

Essential Responsibilities

Distribution and Transportation of Library Materials (95%)

  • Completes scheduled delivery route daily to the 9 libraries in the Bryn Mawr, Haverford, and Swarthmore library system, supporting our TriCo shared collections and reciprocal borrowing consortium.
  • Distributes incoming LIBRA materials and transports outgoing materials back to pickup point at McCabe.
  • Maintains a schedule of distribution and delivery of library materials to all 9 libraries during the morning run and the 3 main libraries in the afternoon. Maintains knowledge of all pick-up and drop-off locations.
  • Reports to supervisor with routine updates as well as any problems that may arise, including but not limited to substandard or unusual conditions or procedural issues.
  • Works closely with supervisor and other access and user services staff to troubleshoot problems - delays, changes in pick-up location, missing items, etc. Implements changes as needed to adapt to new requirements.
  • Protects, within reason, library materials from damage due to weather conditions or handling.
  • Follows all safety regulations while operating the assigned vehicle in order to adhere to the motor vehicle laws of the Commonwealth.
  • Adheres to PA State law and ALA Code of Patron Privacy

Equipment Maintenance (5%)

  • Notifies fleet manager of any issues.
  • Monitors supplies needed to run the system efficiently, including maintaining inventory of boxes, bags, tags, etc.

What you bring:

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years’ experience driving van-type vehicles
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and motor vehicle report on driving history verified by the state
  • Basic math and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Customer service experience

Physical Demands

  • Must have the ability to handle all road hazards, loud noise, uncomfortable temperatures, and physical exertion associated with driving (drowsiness, stress, etc.)
  • Ability to identify a driving hazard, process it, and make a sound decision and react appropriately to each situation.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds, climb stairs, and sit for long periods
  • Must have vision sufficient to read printed materials and operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to retrieve library items from top and bottom shelves.

Working Conditions

  • Spends considerable time driving a van in a variety of weather conditions, also works within the libraries moving boxes of materials.

The market range for this position is $20.00-$23.00 per hour, which represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range at the time of posting. The salary offered is determined based on factors including, but not limited to, experience and education of the final selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
