The opportunity:

Swarthmore College is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time (10-month) Associate Athletic Trainer within the Department of Athletics, Physical Education & Recreation. The Associate Athletic Trainer must have earned a degree in athletic training (or related field), have NATABOC Certification and be certified as an Athletic Trainer (ATC) in the state of Pennsylvania. A master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field is preferred. The Associate Athletic Trainer will draw upon their specialized education and training to provide preventative, rehabilitative, and emergency medical care for assigned teams/student-athletes in various settings—including before/during/after practices and contests as well as while managing athletic training room hours. The Associate Athletic Trainer will assist the Head Athletic Trainer with management and oversight of all areas of the Athletic Training room and of the Athletic Training staff, as needed, and will ensure compliance with applicable NCAA policies as well as best practices. The position’s responsibilities are performed with a high level of autonomy and discretion.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Employ specialized athletic training expertise, utilize current best practices, and draw upon evidence-based research to: evaluate injuries; design, modify, and assess individualized treatment programs; and, provide emergency medical care for the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes.
  • Schedule and assign athletic training coverage for varsity sports activities.
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with supervision and support of assistant athletic trainers, as needed.
  • Act on the Head Athletic Trainer’s behalf when they are absent/as needed.
  • Assist Head Athletic Trainer to coordinate healthcare personnel, including physicians, physical therapists, medical facilities, mental health providers, and more to facilitate services and offerings for student-athletes.
  • Maintain confidential medical records and treatment records on injured student athletes; manage insurance claims for student-athletes to make sure all medical bills are paid.
  • Various administrative tasks; including: ensure coverage at athletic events; supervise and teach a corps of athletic training students to give them a meaningful and worthwhile learning/clinical experience; and manage Sports Medicine/Athletic Training budget, including inventory and ordering of supplies.
  • Effectively communicate student-athlete status updates, limitations, and treatment plans to ATC staff, student-athletes, coach/es, and the College health center as needed.
  • Assist Head Athletic Trainer with managing NCAA requirements – such as baseline/concussion testing; preseason physicals; drug testing; medical forms; and so forth.
  • Refer injured student-athletes to, assist scheduling appointments for, and communicate with team physicians, medical offices/healthcare professionals, and specialists regarding treatment and follow-up care of student-athletes as needed.
  • Document any and all injury reports, doctor/provider visit notes, progress reports, and final clearance notes. File injury claims with school secondary athletic insurance. Provide guidance to student-athletes and families as needed.
  • Document all concussions and communicate with the appropriate campus concussion team for academic disruptions/notifications.
  • Work with athletic administration and coaches to best manage scheduling changes for practices and competition in order to ensure proper coverage.
  • Share information with, and seek guidance from, athletic administration as appropriate.
  • Maintains partnerships with AT programs (WCU, Immaculata) as Swarthmore is a clinical site for AT students.
  • Provide exemplary customer services to student-athletes, coaches, staff, and others.
  • Serve as the on-site athletic trainer for assigned intercollegiate practices and contests.
  • Promote and implement a program of safety and injury prevention by: providing necessary wrapping, strapping, and padding procedures for practice and competition; providing continuing surveillance for hazards and hazardous conditions on playing areas; reporting and/or correcting practices that may cause undue jeopardy to the health and well-being of the athlete/s; cooperating with coaches on matters of nutrition, conditioning, and training; advising or counseling participants of sound health and safety practices; advising and assisting the athletic administration, individual coaches, and equipment room staff in selecting and fitting protective safety equipment, as needed.
  • Provide pre-event preparation for intercollegiate teams.
  • Collaborate with Sports Performance, College Health Center, CAPS, Equipment Room staff, Athletic Administration, and others, as needed.
  • Counsel student-athletes and coaches regarding health, conditioning, illness, and injury.
  • Provide resources for visiting teams (e.g. training tables, water, cups, ice, etc.).
  • Continue professional development and stay abreast of advancements within the field.
  • Contribute to the fostering of an inclusive environment.
  • Attend staff meetings and selected professional meetings so that one may be: active in improving and promoting departmental functions and goals; active in a program of in-service training; exposed to programs, media, and literature that will enhance professional growth.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the athletic training facility on a daily basis—including the cleaning of supplies such as coolers, whirlpools, water bottles, and other equipment.
  • Support the missions, values, and rules of the NCAA, the Centennial Conference, Swarthmore College, and the Department, and satisfy all applicable rules and regulations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and instruct athletic training students; supervise a core of student workers.
  • Has the authority to act on the Head Athletic Trainer’s behalf, as needed.

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training (or related field).
  • NATABOC certification, Pennsylvania state license, and CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of pertinent NCAA best practices and policies.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record keeping system (SportsWareOnline); or ability to learn quickly.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and/or abilities.
  • Ability to be flexible with changes in sports/training and/or clinical coverage schedules.
  • Basic knowledge of other computer programs i.e. Word, Excel, Adobe.
  • Must work as a team and collaborate for the good of the Department and the College.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to NCAA rules and athletics related health care administration.
  • Demonstrated understanding of customer service to the student-athletes, coaches, and staff.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in athletic training or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience and/or a demonstrated ability to lead a staff of athletic trainers.
  • Experience in manual therapy, IASTM, ART, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of Google Suite.

Physical Demands:

  • This position requires standing for extended periods of time, including while serving as the on-site athletic trainer for practices and home contests.
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks of the role—including taping and wrapping techniques, lifting and moving heavy objects such as water coolers, carrying and moving athletic training equipment/supplies, and so forth.
  • Must be able to move about various athletic facilities and spaces, such as gymnasium and stadium bleachers, on a regular basis.
  • Ability to travel between affiliates, events, and clinics; and work extra events as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work extended, unconventional hours, including evenings, weekends, and sometimes holidays.
  • This position requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and move about athletic facilities as needed (including climbing stairs/bleachers).
  • This position will also carry, move, and set up equipment pertaining to job responsibilities (e.g. training tables, water coolers, ice bags, etc.).
  • This position is required to work practices, home contests, and events as needed, which occur at both indoor and outdoor venues. Ability to work in various weather conditions, including inclement weather, is necessary.
