The Marketing & Communications Specialist assists with marketing projects that inspire and engage alumni, donors, prospective students and families, and the external Swarthmore community. The position requires strong writing and editorial skills, knowledge of digital marketing practices such as email campaigns, web content, or online advertising, and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time. The Marketing & Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Advancement Marketing & Communications to primarily serve the College’s Office of Advancement. This flexible role will also support the Director of Enrollment Marketing & Communications.

Advancement Communications
The Marketing & Communications Specialist assists Advancement in communicating the philanthropic needs of Swarthmore College. The Specialist will help produce print and digital publications, update and maintain websites, and create social media content that engages, inspires, solicits, and stewards alumni, families, and friends of the College.

Under the guidance of the Director of Advancement Marketing & Communications, the Specialist works closely with Advancement staff on a full range of fundraising and engagement publications, including annual fund appeals, volunteer resources, large- and small-scale event promotion, and additional collateral produced for gift planning, donor relations, the President’s Office, and other programs.

Enrollment Communications
Working with the Director of Enrollment Marketing & Communications, the Marketing & Communications specialist assists in promoting Swarthmore to prospective students and their families. This includes assisting with email and digital campaigns, print materials, and some web content. With a focus on access, the Marketing & Communications specialist will support projects that promote equity in the admissions and financial aid processes.

Essential Responsibilities:
The Marketing Specialist will:

  • Provide writing and editing support in alignment with College standards.
  • Work with the Communications team to develop content and design elements, as well as overall audience strategy, for digital campaigns.
  • Assist with website content management by keeping existing content up-to-date and creating new content as needed.
  • Help coordinate and oversee the design and development (including by coordinating with various printers) of print pieces, such as invitations, mailers, and brochures.
  • Assist in fact-checking and proofreading print materials.
  • Serve on planning committees for College events such as Alumni Weekend (reunion) to advise on and produce event-specific communications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 2 to 3 years of professional experience in public relations, marketing, fundraising/development, admissions and enrollment, or related fields.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to translate complex information into common terms.
  • Experience contributing to the development of communications materials for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated website content management experience (Drupal, Wordpress, etc.) and email marketing provider (Emma, MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc.) experience.
  • Demonstrated graphic design experience (or experience working with graphic designers), from conceptualizing visuals based on requirements to creating layouts using design software including Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with project management software (Wrike, Asana, Basecamp, etc.)
  • Comfortable using Google Suite, including Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets.
  • Familiarity with AP style.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working at a college or university with knowledge of either fundraising or admissions in a college or university environment.
