The Biology Assistant is responsible for the welfare, husbandry, and upkeep of various vertebrate and marine invertebrate species in their respective labs within Swarthmore's Biology department.

Essential Responsibilities:
The Biology Assistant will work under the supervision of the Animal Facility Manager and Greenhouse Manager in their respective areas to provide care. Core duties of the Biology Assistant may include but are not guaranteed or limited to the following:

The Biology Assistant will work under the supervision of the Animal Facility Manager and Greenhouse Manager in their respective areas to provide care. Core duties of the Biology Assistant may include but are not guaranteed or limited to the following:
• Routine animal husbandry care including health care checks, behavior observation, weighing, handling, reporting injury/illness
• Weekly cage changing, operating cage washer, sanitizing animal racks and equipment
• Keeping inventory of supplies, rotating stock, ensuring all appropriate spaces are equipped with supplies
• Daily cleaning of facility spaces such as sweeping, mopping, wiping down surfaces, emptying trash
• Routine greenhouse tasks such as watering plants, washing pots, sweeping floors, planting seeds, transplanting, fertilizing, and maintaining experimental and collection, etc
• Assisting in the maintenance, sanitation, pest control, and installation of greenhouse equipment such as lights, tables, evaporative coolers
• Complete daily logs and all relevant record keeping
• Participate in standard facility training (ie. in person, virtual, CITI modules, etc)
• Adhere to compliance with federally mandated animal welfare regulations
• Report any and all concerns, issues, emergencies to the Animal Facility Manager, Greenhouse Manager, and/or appropriate personnel. Assist the Animal Facility Manager or Greenhouse Manager on various facility or departmental projects.
• Assist in vertebrate or invertebrate laboratory preparations, species care, and upkeep as needed
• Other related duties as assigned
• Work some weekends and/or holidays as needed

Required Qualifications:
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds
• Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, and tolerate brief exposure to extreme temperatures
• Wear appropriate PPE as needed
