The Director of Health Services must have strong clinical acumen, compassion, and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop a broad institutional perspective and work effectively as both a team leader and team member who can inspire confidence and trust. As a member of the Deans and Directors Group, the Director will enjoy strong strategic partnerships with supportive colleagues across the portfolio of the Division, Academic Affairs, Athletics, and Public Safety.

Candidates should have a proven record of excellent clinical supervision and administrative experience, including evidence of innovation in service delivery and knowledge of public health and wellness related issues affecting college students. Successful candidates will have a knowledge of local and national issues, trends, and best practice standards in primary health care, college health, and health insurance. With a student-centered approach informing all programs and services, the new Director will engage staff in seeking opportunities for innovation in program, service, and business models while ensuring outstanding quality in all aspects of care and operations.

Position Overview

The Director reports to the Vice President and Dean of Students and has responsibility for the strategic leadership, management, and day-to-day operations and administration of student health and wellness services for a residential campus of approximately 1,600 students. The Director balances clinical and administrative duties, guides decisions regarding campus-wide prevention and wellness initiatives, and ensures that all clinical management guidelines, protocols, and practices reflect and are consistent with current standards and evidence-based research. A key focus of this position is to ensure the design, delivery, and assessment of effective prevention/wellness programs to reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success.

Student Health and Wellness Services (SHWS) completes more than 8,000 patient encounters per year. The Director manages an operating/staff budget of $500,000 and oversees 6 full-time and 10 part-time staff, plus 3 contracted physicians.

Required Credentials

  • Master’s degree or doctorate and completion of training as a nurse practitioner.
  • Current licensure or license-eligibility in Pennsylvania at the time of hire and current, active certification as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in health care services and administration. Preference will be given to candidates with supervisory and management experience including design, development, and direction of health-related programs and services, responsibility for quality of health care practice and outreach, fiscal management, budget development, and contractor/vendor relationships.
  • Knowledge of local and national issues, trends, and best practice standards in primary health care, college health, health insurance, and managed care, as well as of national certification and accreditation requirements.
  • Ability to multi-task, triage health problems, and respond effectively to medical emergencies.
  • Ability to triage mental health issues and work closely with colleagues in Counseling and Psychological Services to provide comprehensive health care support to Swarthmore students.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the values of residential liberal arts colleges rooted in Quaker traditions, including respect for the individual, consensus decision-making and social responsibility.
  • Knowledge of and experience supporting a diverse student community, including race, gender, and LGBTQ+ identities, combined with an affinity for working closely with students.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication and critical thinking skills are essential.

Preferred Credentials: Experience with adolescent and young adult/college aged patients, preferably in a college health setting, is strongly preferred but not required; experience with electronic health records desired.
