DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, CHESTER CHILDREN'S CHORUS
The Director of Development of the Chester Children's Chorus is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual and institutional donors in support of the Chester Children's Chorus. The Director will be a key player in the successful implementation of the Chorus' strategic plan. He/she will maintain and grow a diverse portfolio of donors to help the Chorus meet ambitious fundraising targets and assure its long-term financial sustainability.
About the Chester Children's Chorus:
The Chester Children's Chorus is an official division of Swarthmore College, and the College provides essential in-kind support to its operations and activities. The College's Advancement Office provides systems support and consults with the Chorus to coordinate donor solicitations. The annual operating budget is approximately $900,000, which is raised from individuals, foundations, faith communities and other philanthropic organizations. The Chorus was founded in 1994 by John Alston and now numbers approximately 120 children ages 8 - 18 years old. Its mission is to provide an intensive, sophisticated, and joyful choral music experience to young people of the city of Chester, and to support their academic achievement and personal development. The year-round program consists of after-school and Saturday rehearsals during the school year, and a summer learning program at Swarthmore College that includes choral rehearsals, performances, as well as academic, art and athletic experiences.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Working closely with the Executive & Artistic Director, the Managing & Education Director, and members of the Chorus's Oversight Board, develop and execute annual fundraising plans with timelines for fundraising appeals and special events.
- Identify and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, creating and executing strategies for soliciting from a large sustained base of annual individual donors and audience members.
- Successful management requires:
- ongoing identification of potential prospects, and the development and implementation of appropriate donor engagement and solicitation strategies in keeping with best donor-centric practices of the fundraising profession;
- maintaining accurate and up-to-date database records of contacts with prospects to provide department and division leaders and college gift officers with both current strategies and historical perspectives
- Complete paper and electronic correspondence with prospects and donors in a timely fashion, and in a clear, concise, and well written manner that is reflective of the Chorus's cultural and academic standards.
- Plan and implement special events and programs designed to attract, identify, cultivate, and steward prospects and donors.
- Working with the Development Committee of the Chorus, recruit, train, and manage fundraising volunteers as assigned in order to increase audience member engagement and involvement and to maximize fundraising potential.
- Work collaboratively with College Advancement and other College offices to promote a team environment and ensure the success of all Chester Children's Chorus programs.
- Collaborate with contract grant writers to Identify potential funding opportunities and manage development of grant proposals and reports in support of foundation and corporate fundraising.
- Create and monitor income and expense budgets for development activities. Develop program budgets for various initiatives and fundraising events as needed.
- Track and regularly report on revenue trends and progress towards revenue goals to senior management and Advisory Board.
- Participate in professional development opportunities provided through the Swarthmore College Advancement Office and Human Resources.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree.
- A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in a community-based arts
organization, youth arts program, or equivalent professional experience.
- Strong organizational abilities, in particular the ability to manage multiple projects. Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple and varied tasks independently, while also working collaboratively.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including in imaginative and persuasive writing, including experience with corporate and foundation grant writing.
- Strong skill in dealing with people, using tact and diplomacy, and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders, including donors, boards, partners,
community, and staff with demonstrated understanding of donor confidentiality and privacy issues.
- Ability to use a variety of computer applications, including demonstrated skills in the use of word processing and spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs and Sheets), and fundraising databases (e.g. Banner) and reporting software (e.g. Argos).
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, or as needed to complete projects or meet heavy demand.
- A sense of humor and high standards of personal and professional excellence.
- Valid US driver’s license and ability to travel locally, regionally, and nationally.
