MANAGING DIRECTOR CHESTER CHILDRENS CHORUS

The Chester Childrens Chorus numbers 130 children, ages 8-18, from every school in the city of Chester, PA.  The mission of the Chester Children's Chorus is to provide an intensive, sophisticated, and joyful choral music experience to young people of the city of Chester and to support their academic achievement and personal development.

Reporting to the Executive Artistic Director (EAD), the Managing Director (MD) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Chester Childrens Chorus (CCC) administration, including education/curriculum development, financial management, marketing and public relations, fundraising and community partnerships.  The MD supports the Executive Artistic Director (EAD) in program and concert management, and works closely with the Advisory Board.  The MD serves as the primary interface for day-to-day interactions with the Swarthmore College administration.  Working closely with the EAD, the MD is responsible for implementation of CCC’s recent Strategic Plan, and will manage and help design its emerging Educational Program.

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for day-to-day operations of CCC.
  • Hire and review staff, conduct regular meetings with College staff, and support and engage with CCC Advisory Board.
  • Assure staff compliance with College Policies, laws and regulations.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers, and engage with parents and members of CCC community.
  • Assure the work of staff and volunteers are high quality and resources are effectively used. 
  • Lead concert management support.  
  • Works closely with EAD to develop and implement tactical plans to achieve the mission and goals of the CCC as defined by its strategic plan.
  • Supervises Administrative Assistant and numerous part-time staff and contractors.
  • Works closely with Human Resources, implements staffing changes required to fulfill CCC’s mission.
  • Provides guidance and professional development to the staff.

 

Education Program

  • Under the direction of the EAD, the MD will manage all aspects of the CCC’s emerging education program. 
  • Develops an understanding of children’s academic needs and help develop programs and curriculum in response to needs in conjunction with educational consultants and EAD, and design and implement sustainable data collection procedures in support of the educational program. 
  • Participates in creating academic objectives with educational consultants and EAD, participating with EAD in prioritizing educational objectives, developing and fostering relationship with College Education Department, developing and fostering relationship with area college/university education departments, and identifying other successful afterschool/weekend/summer academic programs.

 

Financial Management

  • Direct, monitor and provide financial management oversight for an annual operating budget of approximately $850,000 in collaboration with the Advisory Board Chair, Finance Committee Chair, and Administrative Assistant.

 

Strategic Plan

  • Manage implementation of Strategic Plan, and provide tactical leadership regarding all aspects of program, appropriate assignments and roles of CCC staff and board. 
  • Participate with EAD in prioritizing strategic objectives. 

 

Summer Learning Program

  • In partnership with EAD and CCC Education Committee, the MD plans and executes the Summer Learning program, hiring teachers, acting as liaison to College, and assess program outcomes.

 

Additional Responsibilities

 

  • Other job related duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Master’s degree in Education Administration required, or Bachelor’s degree with related experience that includes curriculum design. 
  • Eight (8) years’ experience in a nonprofit educational environment, meeting, cultivating and working with school and community leaders.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit volunteer Board. Knowledgeable in planning, fundraising, non-profit management, accounting, resource allocation, public affairs, leadership and people management.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving capabilities. Logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions, conclusions and approaches to problems.
  • Five years of supervisory experience including recruiting, hiring, and motivating staff.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and the ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, colleagues, and external constituents.
  • Effective skills in scheduling and planning events.
  • Experience working with parents; chaperoning cultural outings.
  • Deep understanding of educational and social justice issues. Sensitive to others’ needs and feelings and ability to be understanding in carrying out tasks. High level of commitment to children and experience with the underserved and underrepresented demonstrating compassion.
  • Demonstrated coordination ability, i.e. adjust actions in response to others’ actions.
