The Violence Prevention Educator and Advocate is an experienced professional with comprehensive knowledge of the cultural and social causes of the various forms of sexual misconduct and bias-based crimes to provide crisis and advocacy support to students and to lead prevention efforts on campus. The position is responsible for crisis response and advocacy of students following sexual misconduct, including assault, relationship violence and stalking, sexual harassment, and for complying with the Violence Against Women Act, Clery Act, and Title IX regulations. This position is an integral part of and regularly meets with the Title IX team, Wellness team, various student groups and other campus partners. The advocate seeks to empower students by providing clear and timely information so that students may make informed decisions that uniquely reflect their needs.  In addition, this position will promote a healthy campus environment by serving as liaison to the community and conducting outreach and educational events/trainings about issues of sexual and hate-based violence, healthy relationships, comprehensive sexuality education and sex positivity.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master Degree in the field of social work, public health, sociology, psychology, or other counseling-related fields.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience working with victims of crime as a support/advocate.  Sexual Assault Counselor/Rape crisis counseling experience and completed Sexual Assault Counselor training (as defined under PA law. See 42 PA. CONS. STAT. § 5945.1.  
  • Sophisticated theoretical understanding of cultural and social causes of sexual and other gender-based violence; deep understanding of cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, sexual, and gender diversity and the ability to lead programming sensitive to the needs of all student leaders/groups (e.g. LGBTQIA, intercultural, students of color, Greek life, and student athletes among a few.)  
  • Knowledge of Federal and state laws regarding victim support and response including VAWA, Clery Act, and the Title IX Law.  

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Sensitivity to and a thorough understanding of the many experiences and expressions of trauma caused by sexual violence and harassment; proven track record of support for students and an ability and desire to work collaboratively with them; an understanding of the importance of listening compassionately and a history of working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with best practices related to policy development and victim advocacy.
  • Comfortable speaking in public.
  • Adept and trained to counsel students in crisis individually and in group settings.
  • Effective listener with excellent communication skills.
  • Willing to conduct programming during evening and weekend hours.
  • Broad-based knowledge of current landscape related to issues and trends of Title IX and sexual assault as appropriate to the position.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing appropriate health promotion materials and initiatives with attention to the American College Health Association’s Healthy Campus 2020 initiates on promoting sexual assault awareness and prevention strategies, healthy relationships and a safe campus environment.
  • Strong organization skills, ability to handle multiple tasks, ability to work under deadlines, prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work in a supportive and collaborative fashion, ability to work as a team member to build stronger working relationships, ability to support the growth of a diverse culture.  
  • On-going professional development and commitment to staying current in field.

Preferred:

  • Consideration given to certified health education specialist (CHES) with experience in college sexual misconduct/assault intervention/advocacy.
  • Knowledge and experience working with and training college-aged persons and in a college/university setting strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency working from a trauma informed framework.
  • Understanding of restorative justice in sexual violence prevention education and as a response to individual incidents of misconduct.
