Swarthmore College is a private, coeducational, undergraduate, liberal arts college of approximately 1,600 students, located just west of Philadelphia. The Scott Arboretum was established in 1929. Its mission is to delight and educate all visitors and inspire them to enjoy the many benefits of horticulture. The Arboretum, which is approximately 425 acres that makes up the Swarthmore College campus is often named one of the most beautiful in the country, and is well known for its collections of flowering cherries, crabapples, magnolias, hollies, lilacs, tree peonies, roses and witchhazels and for the numerous courtyard gardens around the College’s academic and residence hall buildings.
The Assistant Director of Horticulture and Grounds assists Director and department in providing the highest level of management and supervisory expertise in maintaining aesthetic and safety aspects of all exterior areas of the College and of the Scott Arboretum. Tasks performed include: supervising in Director’s absence full-time, part-time, temporary, student, and summer workers; working with outside designers and contractors on campus projects; performing project management that is grounds/horticulture-related for the College and Scott Arboretum; assisting in the supervision of maintenance of athletic fields, roads and walkways; taking responsibility for horticultural maintenance on all College-owned property off-campus and assisting with areas of main campus which is the Scott Arboretum; promotes sustainability in all horticultural and grounds operations; assists in preparing and administering the department’s operating and capital budgets; manages the implementation of snow removal on College-owned properties. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, landscape design or related field.
- Three to five years of supervisory experience.
- Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
- Master’s degree in horticulture or related field.
